USA & Mercy Medical Jointly Sponsor Ethics of Pain Management

The University of South Alabama Office of Continuing Medical Education and Mercy Medical are jointly sponsoring “Ethics of Pain Management” on Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at Five Rivers in Spanish Fort, Ala. The CME Accredited Program is presented by Donato Dumlao, MD, assistant professor of Interdisciplinary Clinical Oncology at the University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute in Mobile, Ala. and Philip Boyle, Ph.D., vice president mission and ethics for Catholic Health East in Newtown Square, PA.


Chronic pain management causes great concern for many practitioners. Dumlao and Boyle will address end-of-life and pain management issues. Physicians who deal with patients experiencing chronic pain or terminal illness are invited. Other healthcare professionals including pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers and any medical professionals who may come in contact with terminal patients in pain crisis would benefit from the information acquired during this conference.

Chronic pain management causes great concern for many practitioners. Dumlao and Boyle will address end-of-life and pain management issues. Global objectives include creating a higher comfort level of pain management; recognizing, evaluating and treating different levels of pain in all types of patients, better understanding prescription pain medication; identifying areas of public consensus on who makes decisions in health care; exploring theories of pain management, especially as they relate to end-of-life care and examining unresolved ethical issues at the end-of-life, including withdrawing nutrition and hydration and terminal sedation.

Donato Dumlao, MD received his medical degree from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center College of Medicine in the Philippines in 1987. He completed his training in Internal Medicine at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, Ill. After serving as a staff physician and hospitalist internist at various hospitals, Dumlao completed a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine and cancer pain management at the University of South Florida’s H. Lee Moffit Cancer Center.

Philip Boyle, Ph.D., is vice president, mission and ethics of Catholic Health East in Newtown Square, PA. He received his Ph.D. in theology from St. Louis University. Boyle previously served as CEO at the Park Ridge Center in Chicago and also served at The Hastings Center as Associate for Medical Ethics. Boyle taught at St. Louis University Medical School in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Boyle is the coauthor of “Organizational Ethics in Health Care: Principles, Cases, and Practical Solutions, Medical Sources of Catholic Teaching,” and “Handbook for Nursing Home Ethics Committees.” He is editor of “Getting Doctors to Listen: Ethics and Outcomes Data in Context.” He is coeditor of “What Price Mental Health? The Ethics and Politics of Setting Priorities.”

This program offers physicians 3 CMEs; pharmacists and pharmacy technicians 3 CEs; social workers 3 CEUs; and nurses 3.6 contact hours.
